Blessing of the Backpacks

Our All Age Communion service on Sunday 6 September will include a special ‘Blessing of the Backpacks’.

All those in full-time education – from nursery school to university – are invited to bring their bags with them to the 10.30am service on Sunday 6 September so that they can be blessed for the year ahead.

Beginning a new year at school or college can be a challenging time and so we want to pray for God’s blessing on the year ahead, and give thanks for all those who support us in our learning and growing. By the way, if your ‘new term’ involves a briefcase rather than a backpack, please also bring it along to be blessed.

The Rector, Darren, explains, ‘This year, more than ever, we are acutely conscious of the wonderful work done in our school communities. We also know that the start of this particular school term will bring its own unique pressures. And so we want to assure our young people – and all those who work in education – that they return to their places of learning with our prayers and with God’s blessing. We’ll have specially designed bag-tags for everyone who brings their bag along to the service. We hope it will remind them that – as one of the tags puts it – 'God’s got your back!'
